Music in the Meadow with Bakithi Kumalo and the South African All-Stars
Saturday, September 16, 2017 - 5:00 PM - 7:30 PM - We have a wonderful "Music in the Meadow" evening planned for you on Saturday, September 16th from 5 - 7:30. Fish Whistle (Ray Bryant and Friends) will play from 5-6:00pm and then from 6:30 - 7:30 Bakithi Kumalo and the South African All-Stars will play. The jam session will start at 7:45 around the bonfire. Don't forget to bring your beach chairs and or blankets for sitting in the meadow.
You will hear a fusion of jazz and South African sounds as the bass, piano, and drums set the ear enchanting stage, and the saxophone will come in to soothe and excite your soul with easy listening sounds. They will get your body moving as they pick up the tempo with some traditional African songs, a little penny whistle and Bakithi will sing and perhaps involve your singing filling the atmosphere with joy and laughter.
If you're lucky, you'll hear some originals the band wrote and perhaps a tune or two you will find very familiar with the original soloists who played on the records. You are sure to feel the beat, move your feet, give a chuckle or two, and be in the presence of greatness.
In 1985, Kumalo was introduced to Paul Simon by producer Hendrick Lebone during the sessions for Simon's Graceland album. Kumalo traveled with Simon to New York to finish the sessions, and after the accompanying concert tour, "spent several years commuting between Soweto and New York City" before permanently settling in the United States. Kumalo has toured regularly with Simon since then. He has also released several solo records, and continued to perform as a session musician with artists such as Joan Baez, Cyndi Lauper, Herbie Hancock, Randy Brecker, Grover Washington Jr., and Mickey Hart, Gloria Estefan, Derrick Trucks and Susan Tedeschi, Chico Ceasar, Harry Belafonte, Laurie Anderson, Gerald Albright, Miriam Makeba, Bob James, Angelique Kidjo, Jon Secada, Josh Groban and Chris Botti, among many others.
